Class Summary

As we got to know the other members of the class, we discussed what a medium is. Some people suggested that media are tools or means by which we communicate information. Others suggested that the medium was the information itself. We identified other issues that seemed relevant to the consideration of media: whether or not it had to be perceptibly to one or more senses; whether some media are passive while others are interactive; whether media must be considered to happen "live" or not; and whether media created a sense of presence. We also discussed the role of the classroom itself as a mixed media space and how this space will be greatly improved by caffeinated conversations. We pledged not to leave a friend hanging.

Passage

We didn't have any in this class.

Terms

  • Media: A medium is that which writes, stores, processes, computes, and/or transmits information of one form or another. (this is the definition that I suggested we start the semester with. You're free to challenge this as we go along.
