Writing Assignment #11
Due: Friday, 17 April 2009
At the end of "Everyday Use," Dee (Wangero) tells her mother and sister that they don't "understand" their heritage. Write 300-400 words about how this statement is ironic. ("Irony" is a literary device in which, as the Wikipedia says, there is an incongruity between what one says or does and what one means.)
As always, the most important aspect of this writing assignment is basing what you write on the details of the story. Use direct quotations as you answer the question. While your answer should be in complete, grammatical sentences, you do not need to write a formal essay. There does not need to be a broad, declarative opening. You do not need to reach a thundering conclusion. Dive right into the discussion. If you are stuck with how to begin, just start naming the details you think are important.
