Writing Assignment #12
Due: Friday, 24 April 2009
In "Because My Father Always Said He Was The Only Indian Who Saw Jimi Hendrix Play 'The Star-Spangled Banner' At Woodstock," Victor states that he "was born a goofy reservation mixed drink" (27). In the context of the story, he is talking about his parents frequent drinking. But there is more mixing that is happening in the story. Write 300-400 words about how Victor and his family are culturally hybrid and the effects that this has on the family. (You might think about connections to Anzaldua, but recognize that your words are limited.)
As always, the most important aspect of this writing assignment is basing what you write on the details of the story. Use direct quotations as you answer the question. While your answer should be in complete, grammatical sentences, you do not need to write a formal essay. There does not need to be a broad, declarative opening. You do not need to reach a thundering conclusion. Dive right into the discussion. If you are stuck with how to begin, just start naming the details you think are important.
