Translation of "To His Coy Mistress" by Andrew Marvell

Her Demure Demeanor

If time were not a factor, I would fully understand your demure demeanor.

Together, our days would be long, as if time were standing still.

You could travel the world, while preserving your virginity, and I would write romantic love letters.

My love would be there at the onset of the world's creation and last to its final moment.

My devotion to you would have no limits and know no boundaries.

I would spend endless amounts of time worshipping your every feature, your every move.

But most importantly, I would have time to fully appreciate your beautiful spirit.

You deserve love's best, and that is what I intend to give.

But no matter what we say, time will always be at play.

We will not live forever.

Your beauty will be lost, as well as my love, in your inescapable grave.

There, the vilest of creatures will eat away at your body and penetrate your flesh.

Ultimately, your virginity will be tested, even in death if you so choose.

And if you do wait until death, you will be all alone.

Thus, we must take advantage of our time here in this world,

While our lungs still breathe and our hearts still beat.

We should hunt for every opportunity to show off our love.

Love now and live for the moment, rather then succumbing to the power of time.

Come now, together we can seize the day and live life to the fullest.

Although we cannot stop time,

Our love can do the opposite and make it fly.
